Yul Chibuike Daniel Edochie better known as Yul Edochie is considered one of the finest Nollywood stars and has blessed our screens with awesome entertainment over the years. It is important to note that he is the son of the Veteran Nollywood actor, Pete Edochie and it won’t be so wrong to assert that Yul Edochie received a touch from his father; yes a touch that has made him an outstanding movie guru today.
Yul Edochie was born on the 7th day of January 1982 and he’s said to have been named after the popular Russian actor, Yul Brynner. The actor tied the knot with the love of his life, May Yul-Edochie in 2004 at the age of 22 and fortunately, their union is blessed with four(4) children namely: Kambi Edochie, Dani Edochie, Karl Edochie, Victory Zane Chukwubuike Yul-Edochie.
Yul Edochie hails from Anambra State, Nigeria, and he’s considered an indigenous son of the Igbo ethnic group. Yul Edochie is undoubtedly a man of great intellect and ambitions, a go-getter whose works are quite admirable. Lately, the 39-year-old actor had a noble dream of being the president of Nigeria come 2023 and he has continued to work assiduously to achieve this noble dream of his.
Yul Edochie has repeatedly taken to his various social media handles to declare his intention of running for the 2023 presidential election. According to him, he is the right person to rule and change Nigeria for good owing to the fact that he is young, energetic, vibrant and understands the plights of the average Nigerian. Unarguably, Yul Edochie may be the right person, but the problem remains if he will ever have the opportunity to execute the good plans he has in store for the citizens.
However, despite how commendable and worthy this move seems to be, there are some factors that may serve as a hitch to him actualizing this goal of his in the 2023 presidential election.
Against this backdrop, we shall look into some of those salient points that may prevent Yul Edochie from winning the most anticipated presidential election come 2023.
Why Yul Edochie may not emerge winner of the 2023 presidential election
The Perception of the Masses: it is said that first impression matters a lot in life, and this is not contestable due to the fact that what an individual presents to a certain group of people on the very first day of their encounter leaves an indelible mark in their minds about such a person. Yul Edochie is a noble man, this is not in doubt, but presently, the perception Nigerians have about him is that he is an entertainer and not a politician and this mindset can go a long way to hinder the actualization of his dream/aspiration. Honestly speaking, in a much as people may love and admire a person, they have a particular category they have placed such an individual in their minds and altering this would definitely take ages. People tend to distinguish politics from entertainment and there is nothing anyone can do about it.
To drive my point home, I will give a shining example of how the human mind or intellect works in situations like this. During my schools days, there were two candidates vying for the position of the Faculty president, one of them was a renowned entertainer, a show host, and a semi-comedian which generated so much popularity for him all over the school, while the other was a cool-headed and less popular individual. As the day for elections began to draw nearer, the opinion of people began to tilt in a direction I least expected, the popular guy who seemed to have had a great advantage over the other lad drastically began to lose his followers as they maintained that he was more of an entertainer and therefore knew little or nothing about leadership. A large number of people were of the view that he ought to concentrate on what he knows best, and that is entertaining the people and quash his ambitions about politics.
It seemed like a joke at first, but it wasn’t, after the elections were conducted, lo and behold, the less popular guy emerged the winner. Therefore, the point remains that people have a way of judging you by what they have seen you do. If the guy had gone for an entertainment-related position, he would have had a landslide victory because the perception of people remains that he is grounded in that area and would carry out his duties perfectly well.
This can be the view of Nigerians, many consider Yul Edochie as an actor and may feel he is not capable of piloting the affairs of a country and this may affect his game.
He is from the South-eastern part of Nigeria: At first glance, one may be tempted to believe that I’m trying to bring in the concept of Tribalism and Marginalization. But let us focus on reality and understand the fact. Ever since Nigeria attained independent status in 1960, no individual from the South-Eastern region of the country has emerged as the president of the country, Nigeria. Nnamdi Azikiwe was just a ceremonial president during the First Republic, while Abubakar Tafawa Balewa who was the Prime Minister possessed the power to govern the masses and handle sensitive issues in the country then.
After this ‘little taste’ of power, no candidate from the South-Eastern region has ever gone close to winning a presidential election in Nigeria and this could also be a big problem for Yul Edochie owing to the fact that he is from this part of the country. Although there are speculations that a candidate from this part of the country would possibly emerge the winner of the 2023 presidential elections, the chances, in reality, are very lean.
The mode by which elections are conducted in Nigeria: it is not wrong to assert that elections in Nigeria are usually labelled by crisis and catastrophe. Getting a free and fair election in Nigeria has over the years been a challenge in the country despite the fact that we are practising democracy. Free and Fair election although is considered a strong pillar of democracy has found it difficult to exist in Nigeria due to the level of godfatherism in Nigerian politics.
It is not new that when elections begin to tilt in favour of a particular party, the opposition party device means and strategies to nullify, void and stir up violence all in a bid to upturn the results. This issue will also be a hard nut to crack for Yul Edochie if he really wants to become the president of Nigeria come 2023. Even if the masses vote for him, there is every tendency that the ‘men at the top’ may manipulate the system and before he realizes what is happening, it may be too late. Therefore, peradventure the two above stated reasons doesn’t catch up with him, this last one would definitely do.
In sum, Yul Edochie’s dream is indeed a noble one and every Nigerian would definitely want to see a young and vibrant man like him rule the country as he would have a better understanding of what the youths are passing through and may try his possible best to remedy the situation. But be it as it may, the basic realities still abound and this great ambition of his may not be accomplished especially in a country like ours. Whatever be the case, this is just my humble opinion, God willing we shall all be alive to witness the 2023 presidential election and see how events would play out.
